Supporting staff, faculty and students who may be observing the month of fasting
The month of Ramadan involves a daily period of fasting for those who practice the Muslim faith, starting at sunrise and finishing at sunset. This means abstaining from food, drink (including water) and smoking. While fasting is an important part of Ramadan, it is also a time of self-reflection. This year, Ramadan will occur mid-April until mid-May. The end of the month is marked by Eid-al-Fitr, a celebratory event to acknowledge the end of the month of Ramadan. To learn more, click here.

Under the Alberta Human Rights (AHR) Act, employers and service providers have a duty to accommodate religious belief and practices. A number of our students, faculty and staff may be observing the fast. MacEwan has a number of policies and procedures that can assist you in supporting an accommodation based on religion (which is a protected ground under the AHR Act).
