We have been made aware by our customs broker, Livingston International, of a potential Canada Border Services Agency strike involving all federal employees under the Public Service Alliance of Canada. Negotiations between Canada’s federal government and the union are at an impasse. The union could launch a strike as early as April 19.

How does this impact MacEwan?

In the event of a strike, clearance of cargo at Canadian land border crossings, seaports and airports are likely to be delayed as operations are carried out by a significantly reduced labour force. This is particularly true where inspection of goods may be required. Delays could range from a few hours to full days depending on the point of entry and the nature of the goods being processed.

How can you prepare?

Given the threat of labour action, Livingston encourages careful consideration on any imminent transport of cargo set to enter Canada and whether or not it may be more prudent to hold transport until the parties have come to a resolution.

We will continue to monitor and share as more information becomes available.
