Back in February, we shared that Google Workspace for Education no longer offers unlimited storage for all our users. Google Workspace is intended for students and faculty to collaborate, so our strategy for dealing with this change is to prioritize Google Workspace storage for teaching and learning. While we have bought some additional storage to support this priority, we want to take advantage of other options to keep costs down.

We plan to place storage quotas on different types of users. The first phase of storage quotas will begin on April 5, 2023, and apply only to administrative employees. This initial phase will not affect anyone with a current faculty appointment at the university. For any students who have an employee role at MacEwan, this will only apply to your employee Google account, not your student account.

Starting on April 5:

  • All administrative employees will have a storage quota of 1 gigabyte (GB) which applies to Google Drive and Google Photos.
  • Any employees close to, or over, this quota will be placed in a temporary exception group with a higher quota. This is intended to give everyone time to migrate content without any interruption in service.
  • Shared Google Team Drives will not be affected by this quota.

To review your current storage usage and learn how to migrate from Google storage to Microsoft storage, please click here: Migrating University Content from Google to Microsoft. Storage limits in Microsoft are:

  • Personal OneDrive: 1 terabyte (TB)
  • SharePoint sites: 5 TB

If you use more than 1GB of Google Workspace storage, migrate content from Google to Microsoft. Content that is personal in nature should be removed. If you have any questions about how this change will affect your work, please email googleworkspace@macewan.ca.
