There are many different “right” ways to organize a course. Sometimes the best choice is based on instructor preference. Other times, it is the course material itself that dictates the most effective organizational model.

Do your courses lend themselves to a topic-based organization, where students need to know what they are looking for (quiz, readings, A/V materials)? Or is it more helpful for them to know when they covered a certain topic? (Was it Week 3?)

Whatever the best answer is for a particular course, mêskanâs is able to give you just what you need.

When you open a new mêskanâs course, the default is for course materials to be organized into numbered sections. Most often, the instructor renames these sections by topic.

If you would prefer to organize your course chronologically, this is easily done in a few steps. Open the Actions menu (the gear in the top-right corner of the mêskanâs page) and select Edit settings. You are now in the Edit course settings menu, where you can make many course-level organizational decisions. Open the Course format menu and then the Structure submenu. From here, you can choose to organize your course by topic, week or day. If you want to organize by week, make sure the information in Course start date and Course end date is accurate.

Getting used to a new LMS is going to take some time. To help you, a number of resources have been prepared and posted on the eLearning Services website, with more being added regularly.

More information on the topic in this article is available on the website in the Course Settings tutorial under Setup & Navigation.
