There’s safe…and then there’s SAFE@MacEwan, MacEwan’s free safety app.

The move to a comprehensive safety app that puts safety information and resources at one’s fingertips is becoming common for Canadian post-secondary institutions, and is part of MacEwan’s ongoing commitment to proactively plan for rare, but possible, emergency situations.

SAFE@MacEwan provides an opportunity for increased awareness of, and access to, supports that encourage students and employees to take the initiative to learn more about how to respond to a variety of events, and includes the following features:

  • MacEwan Alert – Sends notifications and instructions across multiple channels in urgent safety or security risk situations.
  • Emergency Contacts – Direct contacts to 911 and Security Services.
  • Mobile BlueLight – Send your location in real time to Security Services in the event of a crisis.
  • Friend Walk – Send your location to a friend so they can watch you walk to your destination in real time and trigger a call to emergency services, if necessary.
  • Emergency: What To Do – Access to emergency response guidelines for the most common emergency situations.
  • WorkAlone Check In – Automatically checks in on you while on campus after hours, and automatically triggers a call to Security Services if you fail to check in.
  • And more, including Travel Emergencies, Support Resources, Personal Safety, Campus Maps, and COVID-19 University Updates.

While all MacEwan email accounts will automatically receive MacEwan Alert notifications, students and employees are encouraged to:

  • Download the free SAFE@MacEwan app from the App Store (iOS devices) or Google Play (Android devices) to ensure they receive MacEwan Alert push notifications in the event of an urgent situation, and to access the full menu of app features.
  • Sign up for MacEwan Alert text notifications by texting MACEWAN to 723389, or via the student and staff portals.
