Register today to attend a presentation from two distinguished guest speakers to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, a solemn moment in the annual calendar to reflect on one of the dark chapters in modern human history. The impact of mass genocide committed against European Jewry, Roma, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Communists, LGBTQ persons, people living with disabilities, political prisoners and many others, all in the name of social ‘progress’ is a legacy that haunts the global collective reality even today. Every year, on January 27, the world pauses to recognize the anniversary of the day that Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated by the Soviet Red Army.
About the presenters:
Dr. Joseph Patrouch, from the University of Alberta’s History, Classics and Religion Department, will speak about the collective societal efforts to come to terms with a troubled history in post-war Austria and how this can be observed in monuments and urban structures dedicated to Holocaust victims and survivors.
Dr. Carson Philips, Manager of Academic Initiatives at the Azrieli Foundation in Toronto will speak about the importance of survivor memory preservation to assist modern learners engage with history.
This event is open to students, staff and faculty. Space is limited. Please register on this form. Guests are asked to kindly refrain from political demonstration out of consideration for the significance of the date.
