I am pleased to announce that Dr. Melike Schalomon has been appointed for a second term as dean, Faculty of Arts and Science, through June 30, 2031.
During her first five years as dean, Dr. Schalomon has grown the faculty across the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, pursuing the strategic directions of Teaching Greatness. She has prioritized teaching and scholarship, encouraged collaboration between faculties and schools, and helped lead the recruitment of the Faculty of Arts and Science’s first Canada Research Chair. She has confronted space issues head-on by facilitating a scheduling approach for hybrid courses, maximizing flexibility for students and faculty. Going forward, she will continue to pursue opportunities to establish additional infrastructure to support her faculty’s programs.
While serving as dean, Dr. Schalomon holds an appointment as professor in the Department of Psychology. With her longstanding interest in behavioural neuroscience, Dr. Schalomon’s research has encompassed human sexuality and sexual orientation, and, most recently, how environmental manipulations like pharmaceutical agents can affect various behaviours in zebrafish.
I am confident that Dr. Schalomon will continue to lead the Faculty of Arts and Science in the manner that elicited such overwhelmingly positive feedback from the MacEwan community during her reappointment process.
I would also like to acknowledge the dedicated and thoughtful service of the reappointment committee members. I would like to thank them all for their time and dedication in making their recommendation to the president.
Dr. Craig Monk
