I am incredibly proud to announce the latest honorary doctorate recipients as part of MacEwan University’s Spring 2024 Convocation ceremonies.

A. Anne McLellan, Annemarie Leenhouts-Petrov, Dr. Austin Albert Mardon, Dr. Ruth Collins-Nakai and Dr. Shane O’Dea will each be awarded a Doctor of the University, honoris causa.

A. Anne McLellan served four terms as the Liberal MP for Edmonton Centre, during which she was Deputy Prime Minister of Canada. She was also a professor and acting dean at the U of A, and served as chancellor for Dalhousie University.

Annemarie Leenhouts-Petrov is the president and CEO of the Winspear Centre, and supports many organizations, including sitting as chair of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce.

Dr. Austin Albert Mardon is an author, scholar, advocate and researcher who has received numerous awards, including the CMA Medal of Honour, for his work.

Dr. Ruth Collins-Nakai was a congenital cardiologist and professor, and has won many awards, including being appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada.

Dr. Shane O’Dea was a professor at Memorial University for over 50 years, where he also served as public orator, and he is a leader in preservation activity in Newfoundland.

I am incredibly pleased that these individuals have accepted an honorary degree from our university. Their commitment to their communities and professions is inspiring.

Recipients will speak to graduates during one of the convocation ceremonies:

  • Dr. Shane O’Dea will speak on Tuesday, June 18 at 9:30 a.m.
  • Dr. Ruth Collins-Nakai will speak on Wednesday, June 19 at 9:30 a.m.
  • Dr. Austin Mardon will speak on Wednesday, June 19 at 2:30 p.m.
  • Anne McLellan will speak on Thursday, June 20 at 9:30 a.m.
  • Annemarie Leenhouts-Petrov will speak on Thursday, June 20 at 2:30 p.m.
