As many of you have completed the required online Privacy Training launched in early January, you may have noticed a discrepancy in the classification of business card information and whether it is considered personal information within the lesson and the game.

According to the Alberta Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act, business card information is classified as personal information.

However, disclosing this type of information is not considered an unreasonable invasion of privacy if it is routinely disclosed in a business or professional context and if it does not reveal any other personal information about that individual or anyone else. Such data elements would include:

  • business title
  • business telephone number
  • business email address

Good job to all of you who noticed this discrepancy in the lesson and the game!
