Google has recently announced that Google Storage, a key storage practice employed at MacEwan University, is recently undergoing a New Storage Policy. Through this new policy, MacEwan University will shift its storage practices while still ensuring that teaching and learning through Google services remain accessible to MacEwan’s academic community. Google’s New Storage Policy ends the current policy of free Unlimited Storage in educational institutions and introduces a Pooled Storage Limit which MacEwan University has increased in the interim to accommodate students and faculty who rely on these services.
While MacEwan University has an interim larger Pooled Storage Limit, the university is still required to reduce storage usage across all Google services (Google Drive, Gmail, Google Photos, etc.) while we build a strategic storage model in the cloud to support all MacEwan University.
Please note that over the next few months, Information Technology Services (ITS) will be communicating with MacEwan University users who utilize more storage than the average user in order to best understand individual needs to identify a storage solution for the university. ITS is also completing an analysis to determine storage space for administrative employees and students as there will be a significant reduction in Google storage availability for administrative employees. This reduction in Google storage availability, which will not affect faculty users, will require users to migrate content from Google to Microsoft storage solutions (OneDrive or SharePoint). More information regarding storage space will be provided upon completion of the ITS storage analysis.
In the meantime, please remember Google Storage is for work and learning purposes only so please refrain from storing personal files in this space, as personal files should be stored within personal storage solutions.
