Familiarize yourself with weather terms so that when a potential emergency strikes, you know how to react.
Weather watch
Severe weather has not yet developed, but conditions are such that it might. There is no need to take action, but monitor the situation and be prepared to react if conditions worsen.
Weather warning
Severe weather has been observed or is highly probable. Listen to instructions provided by alert systems and seek shelter immediately.
Shelter in place
Take shelter in a building you’re already in or near, rather than going home or to another location. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
- Listen carefully to the instructions over the public address system and remain calm.
- Immediately shelter inside the closest building. Do not lock doors behind you in case others also need to seek shelter.
- Seek shelter in the lowest building level, or an interior room or hallway. Do not use elevators.
- Avoid areas that have flat, wide-span roofs: e.g. auditoriums, cafeterias and gymnasiums.
- Stay away from windows and objects that may fall.
- Remain in place until the “all clear” announcement is given.
