When working in SharePoint in the browser, you can quickly open a Microsoft file in the desktop app by right-clicking and select Open > Open in app — no downloading to your computer necessary.

However, PDFs are a different story, but you can still edit them without downloading them to your computer. Within Adobe Acrobat, you can mount a SharePoint folder where you can edit existing PDFs or create and save new ones.
