To assist faculty members creating research agreements with external partners, including those relating to material transfers, research grants and contracts, non-disclosure or confidentiality agreements, and data transfer or licensing agreements, a process has been created in consultation with the Office of General Counsel to provide the Office of Research Services with preliminary information about the agreement being created or reviewed.
Faculty are expected to utilize an online form whenever creating or before signing an agreement with an external partner, to ensure both the faculty member and university interests are understood and protected.
The form, and further information, including additional consultation required for creating agreements with international partners is available here. When the Office of Research Services receives a completed form, it will be reviewed and the faculty member will be contacted regarding any next steps required, which may involve working with the Office of General Counsel.
Sarah Bidniak, Legal Counsel at MacEwan, will be holding an in-person presentation for faculty on October 15 at 10 a.m. in 7-383 to discuss common elements of research agreements, like intellectual property, liability, indemnities, and insurance – as well as the importance of signature authority. The new Research Agreements Intake Form and explanations of when and how the University may act as the formal signatory will also be highlighted. This session is designed to give researchers practical tools and confidence when navigating agreements.
