On December 6, 1989, I, along with all of Canada, was shocked at the news that 14 young women were murdered at École Polytechnique in Montréal. They were explicitly targeted because they were women, which led to December 6 becoming the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Today holds deep meaning to post-secondary institutions. We remember those who have experienced gender-based violence and its impact that rippled throughout post-secondary institutions.

I have asked that MacEwan observe a moment of silence at 11 a.m. to honour the young women from École Polytechnique and commit to doing what we can to ensure women’s safety and well-being.

There are displays up across campus. I encourage you to visit them, learn about this important day and wear a white ribbon to show your support.
