Individuals may have difficulty using stairs for various reasons, such as limited mobility, visual impairment, respiratory conditions, vertigo, pregnancy, or other considerations. To prepare for evacuations and assist those in need:

  • Know the nearest stairwell exits.
  • Download the SAFE@MacEwan app or save Security Services numbers 780-497-5555 (urgent) and 780-497-5554 (information) on your mobile device.

If you encounter someone unable to use stairs during an evacuation:

Do:

  • Escort them to the nearest stairwell exit.
  • If danger is not imminent, wait with them for help.
  • If danger is imminent, assist them to the stairwell landing.
  • Contact Security Services and emergency personnel to report their location.

Do Not:

  • Attempt to carry the person down the stairs, as this may cause injury.
