Dear Colleagues,
I wanted to take a few moments to update the campus community on some academic leadership matters and to ask for your assistance.
After more than a decade in senior administration, Dr. David McLaughlin has decided to step back at some point during the 2023/24 academic year in anticipation of his return to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. I am very grateful to David for the different roles he has played across academic affairs over many years. I have already written to staff in the Office of the University Registrar to announce that Janet Soles & Associates will assist us in the recruitment of the next Registrar & Associate Vice-President, Strategic Enrolment Management. While the recruitment, under policy, is to some extent an OUR matter involving members of the MacEwan Staff Association and Out-of-Scope colleagues, there is also the opportunity for interested faculty to participate on the advisory committee that makes an appointment recommendation to the President. I would be very grateful if any Faculty Association member willing to help out in the search would write me at provost@macewan.ca by Friday, August 25. I will announce the membership of the committee in due course.
Dr. Craig Kuziemsky has begun his fifth year as Associate Vice-President, Research, and he has indicated his willingness to be considered for reappointment to a second term. Craig will prepare a letter for the consideration of our campus community, and you will all be given an opportunity to provide feedback on its content. Under policy, I will put together an advisory committee whose members will meet with him and assist me in making a recommendation to the President. The committee will be drawn, in part, from MacEwan Staff Association and Out-of-Scope colleagues from the Office of Research Services, Careers & Experience, and MacEwan International. But because of the reach of this position, there will also be some role for faculty from across campus. I would be very grateful if any Faculty Association member willing to help out in the process would write me at provost@macewan.ca by Friday, September 1. I will announce the membership when Craig’s letter is ready to be shared with campus.
Karen Keiller has begun her fifth year as Dean of the Library, and she has also indicated her willingness to be considered for reappointment to a second term. Under policy, I will put together an advisory committee whose members will meet with her and assist me in making a recommendation to the President. While this reappointment process is largely a matter for the Library and for the Centre for Teaching and Learning, involving members of the Faculty Association, MacEwan Staff Association, and Out-of-Scope colleagues, Karen will also prepare a letter for the consideration of our campus community, and you will all be given an opportunity to provide feedback on its content. I will let you know when Karen’s letter is ready to be shared with campus.
Academic leadership renewal is very important to any university, and I appreciate any time you can make available over the next few months to participate in these processes at MacEwan.
Dr. Craig Monk
Provost & Vice-President, Academic
