The sad news of a hate-motivated attack at the University of Waterloo last week is a reminder of the need to continually assess and improve safety and security on our own campus.

MacEwan University has created a number of resources to ensure everyone on campus knows how to respond to a variety of security issues. It’s critical to review those tools and understand the available supports before an event occurs so we are knowledgeable and prepared for an emergency situation.

I encourage you all to familiarize yourselves with these online resources, which include important information about available supports and tools related to safety and security on campus:

Faculty working in instructional spaces are encouraged to review these resources and to spend time preparing for how they would respond to emergencies and access support while leading their classes.

The SAFE@MacEwan app contains valuable information about how to respond to an active threat and resources you can access to stay safe while on campus. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to download it to your devices to be easily accessed in case of an emergency.

As part of our ongoing commitment to safety and well-being of our university community, the Office of Emergency Management will soon be rolling out an Emergency Preparedness Orientation course. This online course aims to equip all students, faculty and staff with the knowledge and tools to effectively respond to emergencies and to protect themselves and others. The course is currently being tested and will be rolled out across the university in September.

The Emergency Preparedness Orientation course will cover a wide range of topics, including:

  • How to be informed of an emergency,
  • How to respond to emergency situations (including active threat),
  • Considerations about personal safety,
  • How to access additional emergency preparedness resources.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment and support of safety and security for our faculty, staff, students and visitors.

Dr. Annette Trimbee
President and Vice-Chancellor
