There are many reasons a person may be unable to use the stairs. This could be due to the following:

  • limited mobility
  • visual impairment
  • respiratory condition
  • vertigo
  • pregnancy
  • other considerations

If you need assistance or know of someone that may need assistance during an evacuation, prepare in advance by ensuring:

  • You are familiar with the location of the nearest stairwell exits.
  • Download the SAFE@MacEwan app or have the Security Services number programmed into your mobile device (780-497-5555 – urgent, 780-497-5554 – information).

If you encounter an individual who is unable to use the stairs during an evacuation and needs assistance:

Do

  • Escort them to the nearest stairwell exit, and if the threat of danger is:
    • not imminent; wait with them until help arrives.
    • imminent, assist them into the stairwell landing.
  • Contact Security Services and emergency personnel to notify them of the location.

Do Not

  • Attempt to carry the person down the stairs, as this may cause injury to the individual or yourself.

Thank you for your support in making the university safe and prepared.
