This is the season that many of us travel long distances. Here are tips for preparing for your road trip:

  • Get your vehicle ready. Switch to winter tires. Check your car to ensure that all parts and systems are in good condition and working order.
  • Plan your route and check road conditions before you leave. Allow extra time to get to your destination and drive for weather conditions. Plan your trip so that you’re not driving when it’s dark, as wildlife is more likely to be on the move. Let someone know your travel route and timetable.
  • Be well rested and alert.
  • Be visible. Clear all snow from your vehicle – windows, roof, hood, bumpers, lights. Turn on lights while driving.
  • Bring a fully-charged cell phone and charger.
  • Put together an emergency road kit that includes:
    • First aid kit
    • Blanket
    • Mittens, toques, scarves, boots
    • Ice scraper, snow brush
    • Sand/non-clumping cat litter
    • Shovel
    • Booster cables
    • Flashlight, spare batteries
    • Water, snacks
  • Start with a full tank of gas, and don’t let it dip below half full.
  • If you become stranded, stay with your vehicle. If you need to run your vehicle, ensure that the exhaust pipe is clear of snow or ice, and run it for only 10 minutes every hour to conserve battery power and with the window cracked. Put on mittens, toques, scarves and boots, and use the blanket from your emergency road kit. Signal for help with your flashlight. Make your vehicle visible by turning on interior lights while it’s running or tying a bright cloth or reflective ribbon to the antenna.
