Throughout 2021, faculty and staff started seeing changes to their anti-virus software, prompts for a username and password before local administrator access would be granted, and most recently new controls with MacEwan email on their mobile devices. These are all part of a series of incremental updates to user security that will enhance MacEwan’s overall cybersecurity controls.

As part of those changes, new and modified security standards will be published on the portal. Along with other Alberta post-secondary institutions, MacEwan is aligning their security controls to NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology).

The three new or modified standards recently published on the employee portal are: information security framework standard, IT security education standard, and IT security exceptions standard.

Next, IT will be rolling out the new IT security education program and continuing the rollout of mobile device controls.
