MacEwan University is implementing a new digital learning environment, paskwâwi-mostos mêskanâs, to replace Blackboard Learn in 2022. Here is summary of the backup and disaster recovery process for the new environment:

How will information be backed up? What is the process of retrieval in the event of a system-wide issue?

All of paskwâwi-mostos mêskanâs is backed up and can be recovered in case of an unexpected major systems issue. This backup and disaster recovery is the responsibility of Learning Management Centre (LMC) of the University of Alberta, which manages the paskwâwi-mostos mêskanâs platform. They currently keep recovery data for 30 days. MacEwan IT will communicate with LMC in case of emergencies of this nature.

Course owners (faculty) will be able to create their own course backups manually by selecting a backup option. At the same time, we expect to run a server process that backs up each course automatically. A backup strategy is still being developed at this time, which will determine things like how often an automatic backup is made and how many backups are kept for each course. More information about the backup strategy will be available closer to the launch of paskwâwi-mostos mêskanâs in January.
