Please join me in congratulating our MacEwan Griffins women’s soccer team who made history yesterday afternoon winning the university’s first-ever U Sports championship title.

Showing grit and fortitude through a week of national competition in Cape Breton, including a 1-0 overtime win against the University of British Columbia in the semi-finals, the Griffins faced off against Trinity Western Spartans for the gold medal match. In the spirit of our mascot, the legendary griffin, the team showed their magical qualities – perseverance and resilience in a heart-stopping 3-2 penalty kick win to take the championship. This is what being a MacEwan student is all about!

We also extend our congratulations to head coach Dean Cordeiro for his coaching expertise and for delivering an outstanding soccer program, and to Griffins captain Samantha Gouveia who was named the tournament MVP!  For more photos and stories of the team’s amazing journey to the championship game, visit the MacEwan Griffins.

We are so very proud of our Griffins for this thrilling victory and for an amazing season!
