In recent news, a federal election was called for September 20. We are also currently in the campaign period for our next civic election, to be held on October 18, 2021.
MacEwan University is committed to academic freedom, the free expression of political views by members of the university community, and to the value of discussion and debate as an essential part of post-secondary education. As a publicly-funded institution, it is also important that the university is – and is seen to be – non-partisan, particularly during political campaigns at all levels: municipal, provincial and federal.
As employees of the university, we all have a responsibility to protect MacEwan’s reputation as a public, non-partisan institution, and to follow the guidelines set by the university with respect to political activity on campus. These guidelines, which are reviewed and updated prior to each election, address the following:
- Restrictions on the use of university resources (mail, email, supplies) and name for partisan activity
- The use of MacEwan property for political events and campaigning to ensure it is clear such events are not sanctioned by the university and follow existing booking processes
- The display of election signs on university property while following current posting guidelines
- Clarity that employee involvement in partisan political activities must be done outside of the workplace and work hours
- Restrictions on legally prohibited university communications and advertising
The complete Political Activities on Campus Guidelines can be found as a notice on MyPortal.MacEwan.ca.
