I am honoured to announce MacEwan University’s first chancellor and the recipients of our first honorary doctorates.

Dr. Anthony (Tony) Fields, a renowned oncologist and visionary leader in cancer care, has been elected by the Board of Governors for a four-year term as chancellor, effective July 1, 2021. Dr. Fields brings a powerful blend of excellence and compassion to his new role and will work closely with the university’s leadership to build connections and relationships that increase the institution’s profile and contribute to realizing its vision.

On Monday, July 12, Dr. Fields will be installed as chancellor in an online ceremony and will confer credentials at our online convocation ceremonies in the days following.

Dr. Fields will also join MacEwan alumna Brenda Barton (Advertising and Public Relations, ’81) as one of the first recipients of an honorary doctorate from MacEwan. Both Dr. Fields and Brenda Barton have made incredible contributions in their fields and truly embody the university’s values.

I invite you to read the full announcement of Dr. Fields’s appointment as chancellor and plan to attend the virtual installation ceremony on July 12 (details to follow later in June). I hope you will also take some time to watch the pre-recorded virtual ceremony in which Dr. Fields and Brenda Barton received their honorary doctorates.

Both Dr. Fields and Dr. Barton now hold a special place in MacEwan University’s history and its evolution as an undergraduate university. Please join me in congratulating them and celebrating their new connections to our university community.

Sincerely,

Dr. Annette Trimbee
President and Vice-Chancellor
