Following a learning management system review, MacEwan University has selected Moodle to replace Blackboard Learn in the spring 2022 term. The move to this new learning management system gives MacEwan the opportunity to start envisioning a new digital learning environment. The digital learning environment will enable a greater set of tools and applications, including video streaming and conferencing software and a learning management system, to accommodate our future needs.

The transition away from Blackboard Learn was facilitated by the requirement to update to the latest version of Blackboard, which would entail a complete rethink of our current learning environment. MacEwan took this opportunity to review other platforms and selected Moodle as a key component of our new digital learning environment.

Moodle is an open-source learning management system that is widely used at other post-secondary institutions in the Edmonton area, including NAIT, NorQuest, and the University of Alberta. Adopting an open-source platform means that MacEwan can be in full control of the customization and personalization of our version of Moodle to fit the unique needs of our educators and learners.

For the new digital learning environment project, a number of teams have already been formed with representation from across campus, including eLearning, Teaching and Learning Services, SAMU, GFC Teaching and Learning Committee, ITS and the Library. The teams are:

  • Moodle Steering Committee
  • Project Team
  • Core Technical Team
  • PeopleSoft Integration Team
  • Blackboard to Moodle Conversion Team
  • Communications and Training Team

In order to tailor a new digital learning environment that meets our community’s needs, as well as make the transition to Moodle as smooth as possible, the teams will work toward these key principles:

  • Engaging with faculty, staff, and students through consultations.
  • Providing extensive training, support, and documentation to support the transition.
  • Creating a pilot space for educators and learners to explore and try the new environment before launch.
  • Keeping accessibility and universal design principles at the forefront.
  • Maximizing ease of use, simplicity, and consistency across classes.
  • Facilitating customization and personalization of the learning environment.

The project team will continue to update the university community on the transition to Moodle. Watch MacEwan Today and visit the project website for more information.
