As our freestyle and backstroke series discussed, body position is the foundation for all swimming strokes. Your body position needs to be streamlined for performing the breaststroke.

In a front layout position, the arms are stretched overhead, and the hands can either be side by side or stacked on top of one another. The arms should be as straight as possible, with the upper arms (shoulder and biceps) touching the head in line with the ears. Legs and feet are together.

Practice pushing off the wall and maintaining this position relaxed for as long as possible. For a tighter streamline, start with the hands over the top of one another, and then try it with the hands side by side. The more streamlined you are, the further you will be able to travel before the addition of kicking.
