The universal explanation for the arms in sidestroke is “picking apples.” For explanation purposes, the left arm is extended with the right arm on the side of the body. The left arm “picks the apple from the tree,” then is brought down as far as the elbow bends.

The right arm reaches from the side of the body as far as the elbow bends to “the apple” to bring back down to “the basket” on the side of your body. As you bring the apple down, the other arm is reaching for another. This motion is then repeated.

The elbows should not be moving as this pull relies mainly on the hands and forearms. Our elbow at the side of the body should stay tucked close to the ribs, and our elbow above the head should remain extended.
