Recording of Faculty and Staff Q&A
On September 16, Terri Suntjens, director of Indigenous initiatives, Amber Dion, assistant professor of social work, and Shelby LaFramboise, assistant professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications, answered questions, shared insights and provided resources. A recording of the session is available for anyone who wasn’t able to attend. Shelby LaFramboise has also shared her resource list of “story starters” for classroom use.

Kakanata: Real History from an Indigenous Perspective – September 23
Dr. Lillian Gadwa-Crier, assistant professor in the Faculty of Arts and Science, will discuss Indian Residential Schools and their continued impact on Indigenous Peoples. Details at MacEwan.ca/Events.

Speaking Truth – Uniting Music Artists from Across Borders – September 29
kihêw waciston is partnering with the University of Alberta’s First Peoples’ House to present an evening of music and healing with Indigenous artists. Details at MacEwan.ca/Events.

Educational videos
Kihêw waciston has partnered with Edmonton Public Schools, the City of Edmonton, Edmonton Public Library, Edmonton Catholic Schools and Yellowhead Tribal College to produce a series of video resources that will be available beginning September 29 on the City of Edmonton’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation website.

Shirts and decals for Orange Shirt Day
Limited quantities of this year’s orange shirts, designed by eight-year-old Amaya Suntjens (pictured here), are available at the mstore. Orange heart stickers using the same design are also available from kihêw waciston. To request stickers to distribute, email kw@macewan.ca.

In partnership with the Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications, the kihêw waciston Indigenous Centre will be lit up in orange during the week of September 27.

Activities on September 30

Throughout the day on September 30, kihêw waciston will host a sacred fire outside the centre. Weather permitting, Elders will be available to gather outside in circles, and singers from the Speaking Truth event on September 29 will also be in attendance. Everyone is welcome.
