With the provincial announcement that Alberta will be open for summer as of July 1, I am pleased to announce our plans for returning to campus this fall.

This September, the norm will be for all of us to return to campus on a regular basis – continuing to work from home every day will be the exception. While working and learning remotely helped us successfully adapt to the pandemic, we know that our campus is a special place – its energy and vibrancy are among the essential characteristics that define our university and are core to making our students’ experiences exceptional.

The timing of your return will be based on what you do and where you are located on campus. We will use the summer months to develop plans to transition back to campus for the start of the fall semester. Over the coming weeks, you can expect to hear more information from your supervisor or dean about your own return to work. You can also watch for announcements of upcoming information sessions in July and August, and updates to content on the university website and portal.

On July 1, the province will lift regulations and recommendations for wearing masks and physical distancing. The City of Edmonton has also rescinded its masking bylaw.  In accordance, the university will also rescind its mask policy: the wearing of masks or face coverings will no longer be required on campus effective July 1. We acknowledge that some individuals may choose to continue to wear masks and practice physical distancing. We ask that you join us in respecting and supporting your colleagues’ choices.

As we return to campus, every effort will be made to create a welcoming and comfortable environment: common areas and seating will be accessible, all campus services will reopen, and employee kitchens and eating areas are already open for use.

Please be assured that your health and safety are our first priority, and we will continue to follow the direction of Alberta Health Services and the Chief Medical Officer of Health.  We realize that you will have many questions and ask for your patience: your dean or supervisor are working through the details of what this means for your area.

I hope you will be able to take some time to relax, recover and enjoy our beautiful summer weather. I am looking forward to seeing you and our students in person this September.
