As you know, earlier this week, Premier Kenney announced further restrictions to stop the spike in the spread of COVID-19 in Alberta. These measures are expected to be in effect for at least three weeks.

I am writing to provide you with updates on several points related to the premier’s announcement:

Working from home: If you currently work from home, your day-to-day routine should continue as usual. Wherever possible, employees who have been working on campus should return to work remotely.

Child care: We understand the challenges of balancing work and family responsibilities and recognize that the move to online learning for K-6 students may be difficult for some employees and students. We encourage employees who are experiencing challenges with childcare to discuss their options with their supervisor or manager, and ask that managers and supervisors be as flexible as possible. We also ask that faculty work to make accommodations for students who may be struggling to find childcare solutions.

Course delivery: In accordance with the government’s directive, we have in most cases pivoted to online course delivery for the foreseeable future. Please speak with your dean or manager if you have any questions.

Building access: Buildings 6, 7 and the Robbins Health Learning Centre will remain open during regular business hours. After 8 p.m on Friday May 7, exterior doors to all other buildings will be locked: employees who require access to other buildings should contact Security Services at 780-497-5554 in advance.

Student services: Services including Wellness and Psychological Services and Academic Advising will continue to be available to students remotely. The Office of the University Registrar will continue to offer in-person service during business hours. Technology Support is available through online chat.

Bookstore: The bookstore is open and is also offering curbside pick-up.

Library: The library temporary takeout pickup location will remain open in 7-292. Find out more.

Study spaces: Bookable study spaces will be closed as of 4:30 p.m on Friday May 7. This includes the study room in 7-297 and the Allard Hall computer commons.

Food services: All in-person food services will be closed as of 4:30 p.m on Friday May 7.

Sport and Wellness: All in-person fitness activities are cancelled. MacEwan Sport and Wellness will continue to offer virtual fitness activities.

Help stop the spike

Our first priority is to protect the safety and well-being of our community – and the community around us. It is more important than ever that we all do our part to stop the spread of COVID-19 and to protect the health and safety of our entire community: please do not come to campus unless it is absolutely necessary. And remember, if you must come to campus, you are required to wear a mask.

We will revisit these decisions at the end of May. Further updates will be sent via email and will be posted on the university website. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work through the impacts of these measures.
