Today the Government of Alberta released Alberta 2030: Building Skills for Jobs.

The strategy sets out a new and transformational direction for our province’s post-secondary institutions.  It is a comprehensive 10-year plan to drive the development of a world-class post-secondary system.

The strategy describes includes several key objectives, which include:

  • improving access to education and providing a coordinated and integrated student experience,
  • developing skills for jobs to ensure the success of our students long after they leave our campus,
  • supporting innovation and commercialization to create new knowledge and skill sets – and diversify our economy,
  • improving the sustainability and affordability of individual institutions and the sector as a whole, and
  • strengthening system governance to increase collaboration throughout the system and to drive outcomes.

MacEwan was active in the development of the strategy and worked with government to ensure our voice was heard and that our unique strengths informed the future direction of Alberta’s system. With our excellent and dedicated faculty, strong connections to community and industry — and through the delivery of our quality learning opportunities — we, as Edmonton’s downtown university, are already well-positioned to implement initiatives outlined in the plan.

As a student-focused undergraduate university, MacEwan is leading the way in offering our students a personalized learning experience as well as valuable and meaningful work integrated learning opportunities. We are also expanding our programs and creating new opportunities for learners, including our newly approved micro-credentials, to respond to demand in the changing labour market. These are all flagship initiatives of Alberta 2030.

We look forward to collaborating with our post-secondary partner institutions and the Government of Alberta to meet these priorities and initiatives. MacEwan is ready to prepare our students to be resilient and ready to enter the workforce so that they can join us in supporting Alberta’s economic recovery – and in building a prosperous future for our province.
