Limoilou Downs UNB-SJ in Opening Match
by Justin Bell
It was a tough first game for the UNBSJ Seawolves, coming out from the east coast only to fall in their first game against the Limoilou Titans in three straight sets (25-16, 25-20, 25-21)
But what could have been a blowout between the first and last seeded teams in the opening match quickly turned into an exciting game.
“We knew we were in against tough competition,” said Seawolves head coach Wayne Manuel, the eighth ranked team.
The Titans took an early one set lead in a 25-16 blowout set, with the Seawolves running around their side of the court. But they quickly settled down and even lead at some points of the second and third set.
It was in the third that the Seawovles showed themselves to be a serious threat, taking the lead early and forcing the Titans to play to their level.
“We settled down a bit,” said Manuel of his team.
They put on a show in the second and third sets, putting up 20 and 20 points respectively. But the Titans were too strong, making the big plays when they were needed. Tommy Belisle showed why he was nominated for CCAA player of the year, taking off from the backcourt to smash home a few points. Marc-Andre Morency nailed home the last point to end it.
The Seawolves will now refocus, setting their sights on the bronze medal, another two wins away.
For the Titans, they weren’t about to take their first-game competition lightly. Though they were top ranked team of the tournament, they came to Edmonton with eight rookies on the squad, meaning they had little national competition experience.
The win means the team from Limoilou has some extra time off, not playing again until 6 p.m. on Friday. For head coach Rock Picard, it will mean getting a good night sleep before the semi-final match.
“It’s about physiotherapist, video tape and just relax,” said Picard.
